The development of New Media is characterized by technological innovation and shifting social mores, and traces its origins to "traditional media" which have been reconfigured, becoming increasingly popular in the mid-1990s. Pioneers at the time looked to push the boundaries of new technologies and subsequent developments with Web 2.0 in the early 2000s further drove the adoption of new forms of media.
